All About Squirrels

It appears that squirrels are harmless, but when they enter a house, they can cause all sorts of trouble. They can give birth to two or three litters of four to six babies per year, and each child lives for approximately 12 years. The chances of harboring just one or two of these pesky mammals are not high, as squirrels tend to be social beings that often live in groups. That means a lone squirrel can quickly become 10 or 12 in no time. It doesn't take long for squirrels to overtake your home once they have set up house there. Attics tend to attract squirrels due to their easy access and comfortable living conditions, but these critters are also commonly found living in walls, chimneys, and other warm, quiet spaces. They like to chew on electrical wires and cause other types of damage.

In contrast to other rodents, squirrels tend to be more active during the day, scurrying about during regular daylight hours. They are also more active in the fall as they begin to look for a suitable winter home.

What Attracts Squirrels to Your House?

Keeping the yard mowed and areas around sheds and under the house clear and free of debris will prevent squirrels from finding their way into bushes, trees, and plants that love quiet, secluded, warm places. It is common for squirrels to enter through small holes in order to nest, so sealing them will prevent them from entering. Nuts and fruit trees are attractive to squirrels, especially if food is left on the ground. Attic and roof access is easier due to large trees close to the house. Squirrels and other rodents are attracted to your house by food and water sources such as bird feeders, pet food bowls, human food, as well as unsealed pantry foods like bread, cereals, and grains.

We consider these to be “Condusive Conditions” which includes; leaving dog food out, bird feaders, water sources, etc. Growth on the roof, mess around the base of the home can hide animal traces trying to enter the home.

To prevent squirrel infestations, you can remove bird feeders and add deterrents. But sometimes, squirrels just aren't deterred by food and toys.

Are Squirrels Dangerous?

As well as damaging your house, squirrels can also be dangerous to your health. Squirrels carry diseases that are often fatal to humans. The biggest danger is the fire hazard that comes with squirrels chewing through, and damaging wiring in your home. They are also a threat to your pets.

When pets come into contact with squirrel waste, they can contract salmonellosis or leptospirosis, two bacterial infections that can cause serious illness.

The squirrel infestation can lead to Lyme disease if infected ticks are brought in. If bitten by a squirrel, you will also be at risk of contracting rabies. Finally, some squirrels carry a rare disease called Tularemia that can be transmitted. Upon contracting the disease, the lungs, eyes, and skin can be damaged.

Humans have a tendency to want to feed them and cuddle as if they’re a cat. This is known as “imprinting” the wildlife or conditioning them to expect humans to feed them.

Hiring a Professional Squirrel Removal Company as opposed to DIY

Professional squirrel removal services can provide several benefits. First, they can save you money. The Wildlife Exclusion process can be expensive upfront but end up saving you money in the long run. Exclusion services cost less than new duct work and A/C systems, attic insulation damage, roof damage etc. The list of expenses that may come with squirrel damage can be long and ongoing. There are many unforeseen cost that come with potential squirrel damage.

Their are several other benefits with hiring a reputable squirrel removal company. First, professionals are trained to safely remove animals from homes and businesses. They can also guarantee squirrels will not return and re-invade your home using wildlife exclusion protections.

If you choose to hire a squirrel removal service, here are tips to remember:

  1. Make sure that the company provides insurance coverage - this protects you against any damages caused by the company staff during the removal project.
  2. Ask for recommendations from friends and family who have used the same company in the past - this way you know that you're hiring someone reputable. Word-of-mouth referrals are almost always the best way to find out about a business.
  3. Always read the company's reviews online - these should give you a good idea of what to expect from the company. You can learn a lot about a company just by reading its customer reviews. Are they on-time? Do they offer value with their service? Do they explain what is happening each step of the way?
  4. Wildlife and exclusion services are not the same. Be sure to find the difference between companies approaches and tactics.
  5. Ask for examples of exclusion work to compare against. Workmanship will vary widely.

STEP 1

The first step in eliminating a critter problem is to first have an accurate understanding of the problem itself. Noises in the attic are the most common of derived phone calls. Most common of those noises can be heard from the mid night hours to early morning and late evenings. When fronted with the noises, a general distinction can be made relatively easy based on the animal that needs identification. Most often than not, squirrels can be heard from the early hours and late evenings (i.e. 5-8 and 7-9) respectively. Squirrels are known to make entry throughout the middle of day as well in early stages of winter preparation. Rodents most commonly operate in the deep nights (i.e. 1-4 in the morning) respectively. Most often rodents are not normally the known to be a problem do to their late-night operating hours. Although many unhappy customers have the misfortune of the late wake up call. Also, something to keep in mind when studying hours of operation; during the month of January through May. These months are the birthing seasons for mother raccoons. This noise normally is unmistakable do to the sheer size of raccoons. We can expect baby raccoons from February to June. Removal of raccoons within these months will be very different from any other time of the year.

The next area that often comes into play is visual identification. As home owners, a routine air filter replacement may come to be shock when droppings around found in the attic. On top of droppings found the physical alteration of insulation can be a key identification. Squirrels will normally be centrally located to their main entry unless they have been there for many years. Squirrels will pack down the insulation around the outer edge of the attic adjacent to the exterior wall and soffit. Dropping identification can be difficult for squirrels do to the fact that like raccoons, squirrels use latrines (which are central locations of urination and defecation). Rodents, on the hand will be the easiest to identify within the attic. Do to the lack of efficient eye sight rodents must either feel or smell their way along their path to find their way. In doing so rodents will become lost within the attic and spread further and deeper throughout the insulated areas of the attic. Valleys and tunnels are most commonly rodent pathways. Also, keep in mind that rodents will use electrical and pipelines to navigate the attic space along with A/C ducts. Rodents utilize urine marking to find their way on these pathways and can be easily spotted (pictorial examples can be found in the All Pest gallery or provided). Simply look for dark brown smudges along the valley ways, tunnel entrees, electrical conduit, and (PVC) outlets to identify the current rodent activity. All Pest wildlife technicians will identify these areas and discuss them with the homes owners. However they are impossible to remove once there inside.

Aside from interior identification, exterior damage can be accessed from the ground by Dallas homeowners. Most obvious to home owners can be identified as gnawing of the eves ways. This can be seen on the fascia, soffit lines, as well as Cornish boards. Other areas can be tough to notice on the ground. Places like roof vents and soffits gaps can be hard to identify as a place of entry. New home construction today, most often than not, allow for direct entry of critters based on the sheer fact of natural gaps in those same areas. Large rodents can make entry to Dallas homes with gaps no bigger than the size of a quarter. Sometimes the natural gaps hide entry of rodents do to the fact that gnawing did not have to take place for entry. Secondary ground level areas of entry may consist of gaps below bay windows, a/c lines and garage door gaps. Most homes in Dallas Texas do not have proper finished garages, meaning the absence of baseboards and hot water heater finishing. Most garage also have holes caused by vehicles or tools that have been recklessly placed against the walls. These areas are prime locations for rodent entry. To prevent rodent entry, garage door exclusion must be performed. At this point of assessment All Pest Professionals can build a plan based on areas of entry found.
All steps discussed are included in the step one of all pest solutions full comprehensive identification and estimate process. Upon request, All Pest wildlife technicians will perform a full inspection of targets areas and activity within the attic, as discussed previously. A plan and program will be built to that homes exact specification. exclusions methods and exact fixes differ from house to house. A thorough inspection is needed to build the best exclusion program.

STEP 2

Step one of the program can be the most tedious of the steps. Once the All Pest representative goes over the options, the customer now has a decision to make. Upon request on an option an exclusion team will be deployed to start the exclusion process. At this point kittens, will be removed and placed in a safe location with bedding from their nest for the mother to come and relocate later. One-way doors and rodent traps will be set at the beginning of the process. Many times, mother squirrels or other inhabitants will remain still the day of the exclusion. The remaining squirrels will exit through their main entry holes and through the one-way door to freedom. After setting the doors and or traps (depending on the program needed) the exclusion program will commence. Most exclusion will be finished within one day’s time to eliminate re-entry before the exclusion can be finished. If exclusion jobs are prolonged further damage can be caused by squirrels attempting to re-enter the structure. All Pest professionals will deploy enough technicians to the finish the job as quick as possible to catch the critters off guard. If done right, exclusion will be effective immediately.

STEP 3

Step three may be optional depending on the situation, or more specific when rodents are the primary target. This step in vital for the removal of rodents after the exclusion steps. Depending on the time of year, rodents seek different items and foods items. The understanding of rodents can be tricky based on the understanding of these cognitive critters. Rodents can be difficult to trap even for most professionals. Alpha rodents are the smartest of their organization and they can reason with their surroundings. Knowing this, a thorough investigation of rodent objectives will need to be assessed. Rodents may be attempting to store sweets, protein items, or bedding materials. Identifying what rodents are looking for is important for the trapping programs. Many times, when rodents seek proteins, items will not stop and take sweets. All Pest professionals will assess what rodents are after and build their trapping program around their needs. Once we find what the rodents are searching for an extensive trapping program will be implemented to catch and remove said rodents(only after exclusion is performed). These programs usually take a couple of weeks respectively and will be monitored every 48 hours for optimal removal.
